About Us

Balambuli Kwigate Coffee (BKC) is Ugandan local coffee processing and trading company, located in the Eastern region of Uganda on the slopes of Mount Elgon. Its offices are located in Busoba trading centre, along Tororo Road. BKC operates a washing station in Suguta village, Sisiyi Parish, Buginyanya Sub-County in Bulambuli district, at an altitude of 1800-2300 above sea level. With access to high altitude coffee farms, BKC sources and processes the most premium cherries produced by Uganda’s arabica growing coffee farmers in Eastern region.

Coffee processing at the station is subjected to various preparations, including but not limited to: fermentation for between 16-40 hours and subsequently washing, anerobic preparation, honey processing, especially for naturals. This yields extraordinary cup profiles ranging from winery, floral, chocolate and creamy flavors among others.

Our business model is farmer oriented aiming at offering farmers competitive cherry prices in addition to bonuses at the end of the season. We also provide our coffee farmers with trainings on agronomic practices, as well as credit financing to enable them smoothen household expenditure, especially during off-season.

Our partnership with export companies, such as Darley Investment Ltd, has enabled us to bring the finest Ugandan arabica coffees to coffee consumer markets.

Our Origin

This coffee is produced at a washing station that has been in existence since 2021 in Bulambuli District in Eastern Uganda, close to the Kenyan border. Our coffee grows at altitudes between 1800 to 2300 masl. Besides quality, our main criteria for buying is that the coffees are fully traceable, including the cherry price and premiums going directly to the producers.

Farming and varieties

Farmers grow a mix of varieties, predominantly SL14, 28 and 34, as they do in Kenya. The coffee comes from smallholder communities, mostly farmers working with less than 1 hectare each. On average, farmers cultivate less than 1500 trees per hectare, and one tree typically produces 100 – 200 grams of green coffee.

The farms are managed by family members and located in parishes, or communities. Each parish is the administrative center for between seven and twelve villages. These villages can be home to as little as two hundred people. Farmers often work communally with a leader for each group of farms. Our Ugandan coffees are mostly from different parishes with the occasional lot from a communal washing station.
